A Decade of Dedicated Service
About Tara
For more than a decade, Tara Mosley Weems has dedicated her life to serving the people of Akron through public service, community advocacy, and bold leadership. A proud University of Akron alumna, Tara’s commitment to education, opportunity, and neighborhood empowerment has shaped every chapter of her journey.
Tara served as Ward 5 Councilwoman for ten years, where she built a reputation as a bold, effective leader who delivered meaningful results for Akron residents. During her time on Council, she sponsored and championed signature legislation that modernized and strengthened city government, including bringing live streaming to Akron City Council meetings to increase transparency and public access to local government. Among her many legislative accomplishments, Tara also advanced important legislation and resolutions focused on housing stability, neighborhood revitalization, public safety accountability, youth empowerment, and stronger protections for Akron families. Her ability to work collaboratively across Council allowed her to move impactful legislation forward while always keeping the needs of residents first.
Her service to Akron continued in the courtroom as a Bailiff with Akron Municipal Court, where she worked directly with residents navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges. That experience deepened her understanding of the barriers many families face and strengthened her commitment to creating systems rooted in fairness, compassion, and second chances.
In 2018, Tara made history as the first Black woman elected official to run for Lieutenant Governor of Ohio with former Congressman Denni Kucinich, demonstrating her willingness to lead boldly and advocate for transformational change on a statewide level. That historic campaign reflected her belief that leadership requires vision, courage, and an unwavering commitment to people.
Tara’s heart has always remained firmly rooted in Ward 5, the community she proudly represented and continues to serve. Her dedication extends far beyond elected office through her nonprofit leadership, neighborhood advocacy, and tireless efforts to connect residents with resources and opportunities that strengthen families and communities.
Above all, Tara is a devoted family woman. She is the proud mother of five adult children and the loving grandmother of fifteen grandchildren, who are the absolute joy of her life. She is also the proud wife of Darrell Weems, whose support has been a constant source of strength throughout her years of service.
Today, Tara is bringing that same proven leadership, legislative experience, and passion for public service to build a stronger Akron — one grounded in transparency, accountability, opportunity, and a future where every neighborhood can thrive.
